In January, during one of my quarantines, I started writing again. Writing was something I always enjoyed. When I was a child, I made up little stories for myself. I kept a diary and started writing poetry about the seasons and the feelings I associate with them. Somehow I lost my interest in this hobby.
Now, 20 years later, I started expressing my feelings through writing again. The devices and circumstances may have changed, but I still feel like this little girl, sitting in her room alone, writing poems and diary entries.
I experienced a painful break-up last year. I moved out overnight and started a new life in my first apartment. If I hadn’t broken up with my partner, I would probably be a little less lonely, but I certainly wouldn’t write so much now. Loneliness was my chance to come back to activities I genuinely enjoy.
While being lonely, we search for new ways to express our emotions. We create songs, paintings, or poetry. We start writing blogs, making YouTube videos, and taking photos for our Instagram account. Whatever the creative activity may be. Through creativity, when shared, we connect to other human beings as well.
There may be no one around us right now, but someday another person will probably hear our songs, read our poetry, or see our photographs. We learn to channel our thoughts and emotions into a particular task. Through creativity, we reach out to others and connect to those who find value in what we produce.
Here’s how to do it:
- Think back to when you were younger. What did you do when you were bored? Did you love cycling, reading, or rope skipping? Connect to your childhood activities. Maybe you still find value in them.
- Don’t be shy to share your creations. When we show our creations to others, we can positively inspire them. Load up your spring photographs on Instagram, set up your online shop for jewelry, start filming bodyweight workouts for YouTube. There are multiple ways to express your interests and emotions. If it feels right for you to share them, go for it!
- Journaling is a creative activity which is suitable for almost everybody. Through writing down our thoughts at least once a day, we become more balanced. Also, journaling is a great tool to prevent anxiety and depression. If you are interested in journaling, now is the time to start.
When I registered on Medium last summer, I didn’t intend to become a Medium writer. I consumed multiple articles on Medium about relationships, break-ups, and depression. It was a tremendously helpful tool for me to heal from my break-up because I found others who shared similar experiences.
Your creativity can inspire, help, and motivate other human beings as well! Don’t underestimate the power of what’s within you.
